Chameleons are found throughout most of Africa. Dwarf chameleons are unique (endemic) to South Africa.
KwaZulu-Natal is the most chameleon-rich province in South Africa, possessing 6 of the 17 currently described dwarf chameleons. The Natal Midlands Dwarf Chameleon is native to the woodland and forest habitats of the inland Midlands area in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Its specific name thamnobates means “bush-walker”.
